FedEx Ground Custom Fees?

I purchased an mp3 player from the States on eBay 2 months ago, and I just received a payment reminder from FedEx Canada asking me to pay $54 CAD for customs. I was surprised to know this since this was NOT mentioned in the seller's listing. What can I do?

since you live in Canada, you are assumed to know that Canadian Customs duties and/or VAT apply to all items you import into Canada.

I'm mildly surprised that you got the mp3 player without paying first -- seems sloppy on FedEx's part.
