Before I had my son I was pro choice

After being pregnant myself and seeing my son on various scans (from a little tiny thing with a tick-tock heartbeat at 8.5 weeks to the beautiful little boy who was born 30 November 2006) I have changed my views.

It fills me with horror to think of abortions being performed as late as 24 weeks. By that point I had a 3-D scan on which you could clearly see my son's little face, the expressions on his face etc. To think of someone performing a horrible "partial birth abortion" on a perfectly formed little baby like that makes me want to vomit.

I can sympathise with rape victims, abuse victims etc, and can understand that in these cases abortion carried out EARLY (ie before 12 weeks) is the best option. and obviously medical cases where the child has no chance of survival or the mother's life is at risk are another category in which sometimes abortions are necessary or the "best" option.

But I personally know some horrible women who admit yto having had abortions because they were having the "wrong sex" or even one who bragged (at a mother and baby group no less) "Yes I've had an abortion - I had booked the holiday of a lifetime to the USA just before I found out I was pregnant and would have had to cancel it, and I didn't want a baby at the time anyway so I had an abortion". I mean WTF? Evil witch!!

My Mother in Law (silly woman who I don't really like) also claims her ex husband "forced" her to have an abortion because she got pregnant at a time when he didn't want any more children. Yeah right, like someone can "force" you to abort your own baby. Silly bint.

There are far too many abortions carried out for unnecessary reasons and these need to be clamped down on. Abortion should be in extreme cases (rape, incest) or for medical reasons only. And NOT after 12 weeks except in extreme medical circumstances.

This is a very personal decision and for me abortion is not something that I would undergo - in fact I was offered one when I fell pregnant with my second child as I had been so ill during my first pregnancy and had several life threatening conditions. I turned it down.

However this said I feel that legal abortion should be allowed and I would hate for women to go back to the unsafe practices of the backstreet abortion.

I have a friend who is a councillor who signs off on abortion and she says that she has yet met a woman who has NOT had a difficult time making this decision.

I don't think there is a straighforward yes or no answer to this question. It depends on the individuals circumstances. It is a touchy subject for most people but one thing is for sure. Women don't take this decision lightly. There has to be major obstacles in the way for them to take this path. I do feel sorry for women who have to make this choice because it can't be easy for them.I have a friend who had an abortion and she cries on the day every year because she feels so guilty.Nowadays it is different but years ago especially in Ireland it was shameful to be pregnant outside of marraige so a lot of women had abortions, some backstreet, and lived to regret it.

There are circumstances when it should be allowed but early preferably, the legal time limit of 24 weeks in the UK is too late in my opinion. Premature babies have survived at this stage.

I think Edith`s comment is a little naive, as are some others.. in a perfect world everyone would be happily married in a nice house with 2 perfectly formed children!

As a social worker, most people would think that I would be against abortion, but in all actuality I am for it!
Over the years, I have witnessed too many cases of child abuse & homicide. It's one thing to discuss such matters, but when you are on the front lines & see such brutal acts against innocent infants & children, you think differently. It is truly an "eye-opening" experience.
I would hope that through education, people will learn to decide if they should bring children into this world. If it is by informed consent, then maybe these acts of violence will cease & children will be safe in their own homes.

This is a very akward thing to decide. Its too easy for someone to say no to abortion if they have never been in a situation to have to decide. Is all to easy to condemn someone for having an abortion, the person who is pregnant has a huge responsibilaty whatever her decision, and its not made lightly. I would go along with whatever they decided and not sway my opinion on anyone, as one day a choice might have to be made to someone close to home and I would be supportive in any decision made.

I think that abortion is totally acceptable in the cases of rape and people who are too young, but those who use abortion as a form of contraception should be made to live with the consequences.

I agree with the woman having the right to choose. There is a huge difference between a fetus which could never survive outside of the mother's womb and a living human being.

I think some circumstances yes, I would rather this happen than a child be brought into this world unwanted and POSSIBLY denied a decent upbringing.
but I dont agree with women having them over and over instead of just being clever and using contraception ( I know two women who have had at least 4 abortions!!)

well i agree about abortion during the first 3 month when the baby is still not made into a full living human after that i feel its wrong and yes your killing a living human....but i think its fair enough you should know if you want the baby or not in the first few weeks....
for sure its a hard step but sometimes abortion is a good choice
