I used to believe that all people on welfare were just victims of the class system and needed help to beat poverty. I was so wrong it's sickening. Why does the gov't pay people to be lazy? There are people who won't get a job, never tried to work, or have so many children they can't support them all, so they get YOUR tax money to buy THEIR things. I've seen them in grocery stores buying gallons of coke, candy, and other junk food, then when their EBT card won't pay for their alchahol they pitch a fit and dig into their pocket to pay for it with their money, which they should be doing for the whole purchase. I understand that some disabled, uneployed, or mentally ill person may deserve welfare (which they certainly do), but why do lazy people get it for no reason? Many are minorities, and they use that to get it. Many are white trash and they use their children to get it. Some people do deserve it, but I don't want to pay for their needs! I EARNED THAT MONEY, NOT THEM!!

Thank you. And for those of you that said that I'm bigoted or wrong, I pointed out that all races have many on welfare, and a lot of people deserve it, this question is strickley about the ones who abuse it. This was never about race, so don't make this a racial questoin. I consider you bigoted for automatically thinking I'm racist and that you had to put down another race to show how unracist you are.

I think you (like most people including myself until recently) do not fully understand the program It was radically changed in 1997 and is no longer a life long entitlement program. You can read more about the current program here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporary_Assistance_for_Needy_Families

They account for a lot of votes I am sure. These kids are bred into welfare being a right, not a stepping stone up to a better life when things aren't going right in their lives. To see so many in the housing complexes being shot and killed through drug deals gone bad and with Hummers parked outside their doors. Should be that anyone commits that crime in a subsidized home, they get their own place and no more welfare. The children of mothers who couldn't care less about having another but for the money or thinking they are impressing the deliquent fathers of a false kind of love for them. A first pregnancy in teens can be through stupidity and if they need help then give it to them while letting them know full well that they get paid for the one, have two you still get money for the one and it gets cut off when that first one goes to school or day care. It is a crime of theft and it's about time the Governments woke up and saw it as such. The working man who is late paying his taxes can be imprisoned for a small amount, perhaps if people had a say in where their taxes go at the point of earning, the Government would see that few it any at all would send it towards people who breed indiscriminately. Those that flaunt the laws seem to be the ones that get it all on a silver platter. There is no easy fix as long as each and every one of us complains but we don't get together and our voices be heard. The rot has set in and it's far too late now sadly. Excellent question and no doubt millions, not thousands feel the very same way you do.

the government lets people abuse the system because there would be such a backlash if they suddenly cut off all welfare, that it could cause the collapse of the American nation.
If the government just said "forget it," and revoked the welfare system, some people would be fine; they'd make do, get jobs, and scrape by. Others would starve. And not all welfare people are the lazy kind you refer to. Some really are just people down on their luck.
I'd like to see the welfare system provide cheap or free contraceptives to the general public. I think it would help in the long run. Less welfare babies, less need for welfare.

Amen to that, I could not agree more. After reading some of the questions on here today I have been asking myself that same question. I know that there are people that really need the welfare system and I have no problem with that. However I come from a family that has never had much and needed the support from different organizations to get by on a couple of occasions but our goal was always to get off of the system as soon as possible so those who really need it will be able to. I have worked since I was 13 and have had to struggle for everything I have but at least I can say I have earned it honestly!

The government has bred this lazy class and now for some assinine reason thinks it would be a violation of their "rights" to make them work.
I do agree that there are people in need who need the hand up - but we have made the 'system' a career for many people. I just love seeing people use a EBT card for groceries....and EBT that they fished out of a Dooney and Burke wallet they carry in a Coach bag! (If ya think it doesn't happen you are WRONG!). I went to school with a girl who was second generation "system". She was only going to school because it was a way to get more money. She had 5 kids and lived with their father - but they weren't married -- because he would be expected to PAY (can you imagine!) for his kids.
I think the system is a disgrace.

Its because of Democrats. Democrats want all these social services for people, which raises our taxes. I used to be a democrat and believe all the hype, then i graduated from college and made a huge change in my political beliefs. Its a shame that so many people work hard for their education and money and have to give it to the lazy people who don't do crap. I understand some people need it, but it could be cut considerably.
If welfare was cut and made only available to those truly needy and only for a temporary period of less than a year, things in our society could improve, but with all the democratic bullshit that is thrown at us people will continue to fall for it and those lazy people will never get off welfare because they have become dependent.
Though I have heard of a few good stories of people on welfare, there was Lady in New York who won the state lottery a few years ago and she had been on welfare for a few years, after she won, she paid the government back all the money she used. That is an ideal example of a good person.

This is not necessarily an answer but it is what I would like to see happen with the welfare system. Females would have to take a pregnancy test when they applied for benefits if it is negative then any children they have after that time are not covered. I have a family member who has 2 kids and a third on the way she can't afford the first two but got pregnant again, and doesn't care that it taxes the system.

If welfare recipients are caught cheating the system, they will be arrested. Just like if doctors are caught filing false Medicaid claims, they will be arrested.
In recent years welfare laws have been re-written to make people get to work after a certain period of time or have the benefits cut off.
Do some people still abuse it? Sure. But your bigoted remark about who is on welfare is wrong. Way, way more whiteys on welfare.

"The road to hell is paved with good intentions". Social programs are judged on their intent and not on the actual success of the programs. Any thing that involves free money and the government will lead to fraud, waste and abuse.
