Depends on what you are trying to separate. Distillation is great for volatile compounds, charcoal is good for taking out small amounts of organic compounds from water. More detail please.

Each has its place. Distillation is good for liquids and even liquefied gases.

Gravity filtration is good for solids that will settle in liquids. Pulped paper may not settle easily. Centrifugation is good because it drives the solid to the "bottom" of the liquid.

Charcoal filtration is good for the special case of colored impurities that may be soluble in the liquid. It is also good for certain "small molecule" impurities that the charcoal might adsorb.
