I wanted to use a song by an artist from the 70's early 80's in a 30 second commercial that I have to produce for my college class. Is it ok to use a song for a project even if it's not mine and I give credit in my project to the artist and NOT claim the song as my own?!?!?

It's probably OK to use the song according to the "fair use" provisions of US copyright law.

Yes, since it's not being used for a "real" commercial, just for a project, you can.

If you wanted to use it for a "real" commercial, you'd have to get permission.

It's probably ok, as long as you don't use it for commercial purposes. If the commercial airs on TV, then you've got problems.
