Look on fractions as 'parts'. If you have a whole one and it is divided into four then each smaller portion is one fourth or one quarter or 1/4. If you had three of these pieces you would have three fourths or 3/4.

The top number is the 'numerator' which tells you how many pieces you have and the bottom number is the 'denominator' which tells you the size of the portion.

If you have a whole number and a fraction like 3 3/4 then each whole equals four quarters plus the 3/4 fraction. To find how many quarters there are in total multiply the whole number by the denominator (4) and add the numerator (3). So you get 3 x 4 = 12 + 3 =15 quarters or 15/4.

To multiply fractions you have to have a 'Common denominator' which means the bottom number of each fraction must be the same so if you had to multiply 2/5 by 7/8 you need a number that both can divide into. The smallest is 40 (5 x 8). You then need to multiply the numerators by the opposite denominator so 2 x 8 = 16 and 7 x 5 = 35 so you would get 16/40 x 35/40. This gives 560/1600.Naturally you then need to cancel down like 56/160 = 28/80 = 14/40 = 7/20 sand that's your answer.

To divide fractions such as 3/5 divided by 3/7 you are trying to find how many portions of 3/7 there are in 3/5 so, again, common denominator by finding a number both can divide into and it's 35 (5 x 7). Cross multiply the numerators and we get 21/35 divided by 15/35. As the 35 cancels out we are left with 21 divided by 15 = 1 6/15 = 1 2/5 and that's your answer.

Addition of fractions is like 2 3/5 + 1 7/8. Again we need common denominators so it'll be 40 ths. so
2 3/5 = 2 24/40 and
1 7/8 = 1 35/40

add together and we get 3 59/40 = 4 19/40

If it had been subtraction you would get
2 24/40 - 1 35/40 =104/40 - 75/40 = 29/40
