Commercial farms are only interested in profit, like most corporations. After the hens are no longer producing eggs, they are sent to be slaughtered, usually for soups, pet foods etc.
A small family farm might keep the hens & take care of them after they've retired fron egg-laying, but those hens would be the lucky few.
The details of egg production are even sadder than this, but don't take my word for it, do a bit of research.
