There is no way to know since you haven't defined 'i'.
If 'i' = 1 then 5+3(1)=8, -2+5(1)=3.
'i' may equal 3.5 since if it did then 5 + 3i would equal -2 +5i.

Let the y-axis = Imaginary Axis and the x-axis be the real axis.
So you would plot 5+3i as a point that is 5 units down the real axis and 3 units up the imaginary axis.

This gives you a way of visualizing a complex number.

What do you mean by "what do these... equal?"

it equals itself.... you cannot simplify these any further. A comlex number has a real and an imaginary component.
