it IS static electricity that has built up in the car. leather seats has nothing to do with it. the clothes you're wearing rubbing across the seat, the low humidity, all equal ZAP!!! I suggest that when you get out of the car, before you put your feet on the ground, grab the door, the roof, or some main part of the car, so that when you ground yourself, you won't get that jolt. It happens to me all the time. Be extremely careful when gassing up your cars. You see it all the time, women mostly, get out, start the fueling process, get BACK into the car to stay warm and talk on the cell phone.
Then the pump cuts off and you step out of the car without touching anything to discharge the static you just built up, then you grab the handle of the gas pump, causing a spark, causing it to flashfire in your tank. most people then panic, taking the nozzle OUT of the car, allowing the fire to burn more freely, and possibly spilling gas on the ground, spreading the fire. Heed my warnings!!! I'm a firefighter, and have seen it COUNTLESS times!!!

you can buy a anti-static strip for a very small price which hangs of your car and touches the floor which earth the static which will get rid of your nasty shocks the strip looks a big nasty but it works
