A friend and I have begun playing World of Warcraft, and we have both chosen Alliance races so that we may team together, but we have different starting areas. If we both desire to follow the intended storylines and complete our quests along the way, how long will it be before our paths cross naturally? Should we start with the same race if we want to play together, or do all the races eventually end up in the same place after a few levels?

Specifically we are gnome and night elf. Should "out-leveling" content not even be a concern in this game? What would the consequences be if we were to abandon our native areas to team together. Would we miss out on special quests and rewards from "out-leveling" content, or in WoW can you always go back to questgivers you skipped?

If you do things the way you are supposed to, you would have to wait until you are in your 20's before you meet (someone mentioned the Wetlands and a spot that you may be able to link up).

If one (or both) of you decide to abandon your starting area, you probably won't miss too much. At those low levels, there won't be any story lines that are too involved. The difficult part would be the actual linking up. For Alliance characters (especially Night Elves and Dranei) you would have to cross the Wetlands to get to the Human/Dwarf starting zones. It can be done, though you may have to die a few times (just pack your armor in your backpack and run naked, your armor won't take as much damage)

Depends on the race and sometimes class. Generally about the time you hit wetlands is when you'll come across each other. But keep in mind that there's always at least two different areas for each level range. Darkshore/Loch Modan. Ashenvale/Wetlands. So you might not meet in similar zones even until level 30.

Edit: If you truly wish to play together you can actually head to his/her starting zone by foot. It's a bit of a trek though and you might die to creeps. Towards about level 40-50 you start hitting all the zones you can for quests to speed up the leveling process and at that point it doesn't really matter what zone or quest lines you've done.

They wouldn't necessarily meet ever; there are enough zones to quest in at each level that you wouldn't run into each other.

However, you can travel to your friend's starting area (or vice versa) with relative ease - you may die a few times, or you can wait until about level 6 if playing Dwarf/Gnome and Human; you'll be out of the starting area and into the first "real" zone. Dwarves and gnomes will find Ironforge, and humans will find Stormwind, two cities which are connected by an underground railway.
