How common IS this?! I bought a canopy for a crib on Ebay, and after I had paid throug Paypal, Ebay notified me that the seller's items had all been removed and the privilages had been revoked. Then, within days, the SELLER supposedly sent out the item through DHL, and Paypal notified me that the item had been shipped. I waited, and used the tracking number given. Today I saw that the item was supposedly CONFIRMED DELIVERED to an address in FLORIDA!!! (FYI, I live in North Carolina). WTF is going on? Is this really common? How can I protect myself?! The seller had a decent track record, though it WAS a newer account. Should I just avoid new sellers? I've already filed a claim through PayPal. What else can I do?

Keep up with your claim on PayPal. Always use a credit card to pay because you can dispute the charge with your credit card.

No, don't buy from sellers without feedback. Most people will at least buy on eBay a few times before they jump right into selling and you can at least see their feedback reputation for buying. Otherwise, it's a possible account opened purely for fraud.

Look at an established seller's feedback before you bid and even more important than looking at their negatives, look at how professionally they *reply* to their negatives. Don't buy from sellers that say, "No refunds unless grossly misrepresented." Those people aren't operating with a full deck. Not only is that comment ridiculous, it's not legal. And don't buy from sellers who go on a rant on their auction page about how they will leave feedback *after* you have.

You're doing the right thing: Report it to Ebay and file a claim with PayPal.

If PayPal doesn't give you satisfaction fairly quickly, consider disputing the charge with your credit card company, assuming you used a credit card.

It's fairly easy to get a good feedback rating on Ebay in short order. What some scammers do is set up multiple Ebay accounts and then buy and sell small items between those accounts and leave positive feedback. They also buy several small-ticket items from other sellers to get positive feedback from them, too. If you see an account that's only been open a short time, but it has a significant positive feedback, go into their feedback screen and take a look at the individual items. If it's a comic book collector buying up a bunch of comic books, then maybe that's OK. But if it's a bunch of unrelated items with a very low dollar value on each transaction, be a little wary and see if you can find out more about the seller.

Just make sure you don't let the Paypal claim deadline pass. If you opened a dispute you can escalate it to a claim. Paypal will put a hold on the seller's account until they can refund your money. If the seller tries to say that the item was delivered, make sure you respond with the DC# that has the address in the wrong state. Good luck.

I know this won't be much help but due to one incident, and all it takes is one with me, I switched to Amazon.com. I have never been ripped off there.
No bidding there, no waiting, no crap at all. Plus, many of the items that I could not find after weeks of searching for on Ebay I found on Amazon.
On a similar note, print and copy all of the paper work you can concerning this matter and file a complaint or claim on this matter. If you let it go they'll just keep doing it to others.

Yes, always check the seller's ratings. I think that may be all you can do- perhaps small claims court if the paypal claim doesn't work. Have you filed a complaint with ebay?

You cant simple answer, all you can do is complain to eBay about the seller and hopefully they will ban him for selling counterfeit goods, its just one of those things, eBay is usually great, I have over 500 feedback and nearly all of those transactions were for useful and fit for purpose stuff, but sometimes you just get a bad one, just leave the appropriate feedback and hope others are warned!

It's only happened to me once, and I've bought about 100 things on eBay. It is frustrating, and there's little you can do aside from leaving negative feedback and alerting eBay and Paypal.
