Considering that gold mining in western Europe was and is an activity with negligible economical contribution to Spain and Italy for instance, I am wondering who may have been so generous to "donate" those tonnes and tonnes of that valuable precious metal.

The New World of course. There was plenty of god here in the Americas, ripe for the taking by the Europeans....especially in the Aztec empire. Naturally, this gold had to be taken by force. Hence, the genocide.

There is also gold in all of the churches in Eastern Europe too.
One of the reasons my husband refuses to enter in a church even though he was raised a Caltholic is because he says that the gold and riches were taken from poor people with only a promise of going to heaven.They could of used some of the money to feed their famlies on earth and not live in hell here.
