I had several guppies and a couple of other small fish that the fish store told me were compatible with guppies..last night we had just two fish left and one died during the night, so now there is just one fish alone in the tank (not a guppy, I can't remember the name). I put a mirror up next to the tank for now but will he be happy with just that? We don't want to get another fish because we didn't want to have fish anymore after these guys, but I don't want him to be lonely either, so would it be better to find a home for him that has other fish (that would make me sad too but if we have to, we have to)? Any other suggestions?

I've had the fish quite a while - not a new tank (all except this one and the one who died last night died a pretty long time ago)..they got along well from everything I saw, so I definitely don't think this one was bullying or eating the others.

From looking at pictures, I think maybe it's a platy...

Fish don't care, their brains are so small they won't know the difference.

I would be less concerned with your fish being lonely, and more concerned with why the other one died. Your remaining fish may be joining him in the big fish pond in the sky.
Are you using tap water in your tank?
If so, be sure to add a water conditioner to remove the chlorine.
There are all kinds of things added to tap water to kill the bad stuff when people drink it. You can use reverse osmosis water in a fish tank, but only replace 25% of the water at a time.
A sudden change in temperature can shock the fish also.
Best of Luck and enjoy!

Sounds like a betta. Is it super pretty with long fins? Is your tank cycled? Why did they all die? Did you add a lot of fish at once, causing ammonia to spike? Are the water parameters ok? Bettas are good solitary fish. I always feel bad leaving one fish all by itself though. If it were me, I'd get a small school of three little cheap fish. That is if the tank is ok to add fish.

The fish will be lonely. Everything likes companionship, even fighting fish like sex. Everything has an innate sense of procreation. Find out what kind of fish you have. Get another of the opposite sex if possible, and check the water in your tank, it may be too alkaline, etc., you may need to clean and modify the water.

Find out what he is. Some fish can only be house alone or they kill everything in the tank. He likes it that way. Maybe the other fish were so small it thought they were food. Maybe you just need bigger fish.

It depends on the type of fish. Some fish do best in schools and others are fine or prefer to be on their own. I'd look up your type online and see what's best for him. If he's old and coming close to passing naturally from old age, disturbing him by giving him away might be worse than any loneliness he feels by keeping him in his familiar tank by himself. Who knows, though. If only fish could talk :)

I've had guppies of my own, which died off like they were infected with the plague... as for the remaining fish, I hardly think they care for companions. just keep it happy and the tank clean and all should be well. good luck with everything.

Just get rid of the fish. I have an aquarium with about ten gold fish and two koy and they play all the time. It sounds stupid, but they do have brains, learn and get upset. I got rid of every other aquarium because I wanted to focus on my fish. Remember they have feelings too.

Yes you give him a home. Give it to some one who have many fishes. Do not feel sentiment over that. It is for the happiness for the fish and you..

Most fish will be ok alone in the tank - especially if it's somewhere the family hangs out.
However.. from your post it sounds like you haven't had them long. If you put them in the tank without cycling it, then that one will probably die, too.

least confusing answer might want to be bettas by ability of small tank how small? for 5 gallons you may want to do like 3 smaller gouramis like dwarf gouramis, sparkling gouramis, croaking gouramis. there are amazing little adult men said as darios yet they are seldom accessible at your interior of sight puppy shop. killifish do properly in small tanks. they are commonly somewhat expensive and reduce back to that puppy shop element -- in a lot of circumstances no longer there. dwarf puffers might want to be a sensible determination. they are universal now and actual accessible. in a small tank they could in difficulty-free words flow properly with different dwarf puffers.
