Car or train to Ilshofen from Frankfurt am Main? Is there a train to Ilshofen?

We will have a rental car and would like to tour a bit. What and where should we go within a reasonable day trip from Frankfurt? We will be in Frankfurt for 4 days the week after Thanksgiving and have been told that it gets dark very early (3:30ish) in the winter. Is that true as well?

You should be aware that there is a train strike in Germany right now. This could affect your trip or it may be over by then.

I live in northern Italy and have used Frankfurt as a base for day trips several times. I recommend Mainz, Heidelberg, Marburg, Koblenz, and Cologne as relatively easy and interesting day trips. Obviously, you couldn't do all of these in a 4 day visit, but you could pick the one that most interests you. If you only do one, I would recommend Heidelberg or Koblenz (with stops at some of the towns along the way). There are a ton of castles along the Rhine valley on the drive (or train trip) to Koblenz.

It does get dark early, but sunset is more like 4:30 pm than 3:30 right now (it's at 4:36 today).
