In a country with so many social services how is it possible to end up the way he did? I didn't know it gut he hadn't worked for year but was on yahoo answers? Why were there not people to get this man counseling which it appears he so badly needed?
Something is all wrong in this country?
Adnitted we disagreed almost on everything but he was bright one of our best and brightest.
RIP My prayers go out to you.

Sad. You have to wonder how someone as bright as this would have no hope or purpose in life. The tragedy is the solution he wanted. (assumption based on that story)
There is hope. You just have to look for it in the right place.

In the Politics section, he was a voice of calm reason and a balance to the senseless rants.
I hope that anyone considering suicide would listen to this song by RUSH before they take that final, irreversible step:
Proud swagger out of the schoolyard
Waiting for the world's applause
Rebel without a conscience
Martyr without a cause.
Static on your frequency
Electrical storm in your veins
Raging an unreachable glory
Straining at invisible chains.
And now you're trembling on a rocky ledge
Staring down into a heatless sea
Can't face life on a razor's edge
Nothing's what you thought it would be.
All of us get lost in the darkness
Dreamers learn to steer by the stars
All of us do time in the gutter
Dreamers turn to look at the cars.
Turn around and turn around and turn around
Turn around and walk the razors edge
Don't turn your back
And slam the door on me.
It's not as if this barricade
Blocks the only road
It's not as if you're all alone
In wanting to explode.
Someone set a bad example
Made surrender seem all right
The act of a noble warrior
Who lost the will to fight.
And now you're trembling on a rocky ledge
Staring down into a heartless sea
Done with life on a razors edge
Nothing's what you thought it would be.
No hero in your tragedy
No daring in your escape
No salutes for your surrender
Nothing noble in your fate
Christ, what have you done?
All of us get lost in the darkness
Dreamers learn to steer by the stars
All of us do time in the gutter
Dreamers turn to look at the cars.
Turn around and turn around and turn around
Turn around and walk the razors edge
Don't turn your back
And slam the door on me.

My name is Kim. I do not know yours. I emailed him myself. But there is little anyone can /could do if he chose to move on his own. We live in a very abstract world. If only he let someone in. Yet he had loving family and , in his way let each of us in. We can be blessed that we knew him. I know your pain as a caregiver myself. Each post I feel sadness. Some anger to those who exploit the news. Yet he never did show any of us that. Keep up with the posts and include law & ethics. The best are coming out to honor him. Yet, I believe he only wanted to share with people like you & simple me in his life. Strange eh? Wisdom and no pain.

Its hard to know what to say with out knowing more.
I will greatly miss him too.
Its a loss.
Hopefully he is better off now - and I share your feelings.
In reflection, maybe I can better try to follow the example he set. I don't know if he needed counseling with out knowing more. I tend to think twice about second guessing some one's decisions. I am sorry he is gone. He was one of the better ones.

What happened?
Edit: Oh wow. I can only hope that this story brings some humility and human spin to people on this forum.
This was a man of great knowledge and degrees with no one to turn to and no job/money. He will be missed.

He probably had a lot of pain that he never let anyone see. What he wrote in his blog was probably only a sliver of what he was going through. We'll never know. Look at Brad Delp, the lead singer of Boston, who killed himself last March. In all reports and interviews, no one knew he was anywhere near that kind of "conclusion". You never know.
