It could be a timing problem.
GM has had a number of problems with the electronic fuel pumps. If you haven't done so already contact GM.

Black smoke is caused by an over rich mixture and normally occurs whenever the engine is working hard. Like going up a steep grade, being loaded heavy or during heavy acceleration. More black smoke can be observed when the vehicle is operated at higher altitudes because the air is thinner. A dirty air filter is also another cause of excessive black smoke. If black smoke is noticed while the engine is idling at low altitude or under normal driving conditions this condition should be diagnosed a.s.a.p. to prevent engine damage.

basically if your gunning the engine and getting black smoke: this is normal

if you have continous black smoke from the exhaust then theres a problem

Completely normal, it's a diesel. The black smoke is just unburned fuel and won't hurt anything, if you add injectors it will just dump in more fuel and make more black smoke. If you don't like it try cleaning your air filter and if that doesn't work you can add an aftermarket air filter which will push more air into the engine and make the engine run more efficiently.
