Why would a a large well know company , tell its employess that they have to work all the Holidays?

You need to remember that the reason why they have a job, is that your company has customers. If the customers come in on holidays, employees should to, otherwise you can end up having no job, and you won't need to worry about having off on your holiday.

That's a good question. Unless your holidays are guaranteed through some type of collective bargaining unit or a contract, you are kind of at the mercy of the Company when it comes to Holidays. There is no law that says they have to give you holidays off. And if they determine that the most equitable way to handle the situation for ALL employees, is to have everyone report to work, then that's the way it is. I would be surprised to hear that there is anything you can do about it.
I have to assume they gave a reason. You could challenge the reason, but that could backfire on you. Why do you have to be at work, but no support staff in customer facing locations? That part doesn't make sense to me.
See if you can use vacation days if you really want the days off.

Depends on the company. If it is some kind of emergency or personal care services, then that has to be available all the time.

Are you saying it's an office type environment, and you have to work on Christmas? That would be really weird. If you are talking holidays like Veterans Day or Presidents Day or something, then it wouldn't be unusual since each company sets what holidays they give to employees, and other than the government, very few give all of them.

Because I guess things need to get done, even on Holidays. I worked at one of the biggest companies in the world for 8 years, and believe me, while we didnt plan to work through holidays, if a major project was off schedule or something, it was expected you were going to do what you needed to do to get the job done, regardless of any holiday. It doesnt surprise me at all if other places are similar.
