There is no right answer in this case. The British soldiers said they fired in self defense while the Americans said that the British soldiers were at fault. It all depends on which side you believe more.

The American crownd got mouthy and pushy with armed soldiers standing guard. As the Americans expected, the soldiers opened fire. Only a few were killed.
