I have SONY Trinitron WEGA, 24" ... can I connect my Acer laptop to watch DVDs and/or view photos? Maybe purchase an adapter? Any suggestions?

You might be able to though whether it'd be worth it is another matter (TV's typically have really crappy image quality).

For DVD playback and Photo viewing from the other side of the room the quality of a TV should be enough though so you just need to connect whatever TV out your laptop has to the input of the TV (probably S-Video but maybe Composite)

If your laptop doesn't have TV out (RTFM to find out) then you will need a VGA to TV adapter which you should be able to find somewhere.

Don't go above 800x600 and if using NTSC you probably shouldn't go above 640x480 and don't expect things to be clear.

If your graphics card has an S-Video port you can and some tvs have it built in but you might need an s-video to rgb adapter.
