I remember a professor saying that the Americans were effective because they were not professionally trained, like the British soldiers. They had to rely on more guerrilla-like tactics, like hiding behind trees and shooting, rather than lining up in a neat formation and marching. It probably also helped because the Americans were fighting on their own soil, and therefore knew the terrain better than the Brits.

Well the goals of the the Americans were different than the British. The British had to defeat the American army to win without destroying the colonies. The Americans had to not be defeated to win. Additionally, the Americans used unconventional means such as hit and run and other guerrilla tactics because they had at best a slim chance of defeating the Brits in a toe to toe battle.
Also, many have argued that the Brits where their own worst enemy. They failed on many occasions to capitalize on advantages and allowed the American army to slip away time and time again.
Toss in supply lines, the French assistance, and political division in England ... it was really just a matter of time for the colonies to win as long as Washington could keep an army together and in the field.

Contrary to beliefs, the American military was not effective at all with the exception of the Vermont militia. That was due to the British not wanting to expend their efforts in a non meaning encounter. The rebels were driven out of major New England cities, New York , Long Island, Pennsylvania. It wasn't until the attack on Cornwallis' troops who fell asleep at the switch, that the course of the war changed. That, and the fact that Tory support was dwindling in the colonies.
