It can be good money, although it takes time to build up a client base. Most Realtors dont make a ton for the first several years, but end up doing well over time. However, the market is horrible right now, and there are a ton of Agents, Mortgage Brokers, etc losing houses, having cars repossessed, etc because its live or die by your sales, and a whole lot of them are dying. As to how long, each state has its own requirements as to how many classroom hours you have to take before you can sit the licensing exam. If I had to guess at an average, I would guess around 6 months.

Getting into real estate as an agent is not a job. No one is gonna pay you a salary as if you worked for someone.
About getting your license, you should look in the telephone book and find a real estate school. Call them, they will be able to give you an idea of how long their class last and the amount of time before you get your license.
That is just getting your license. Some Schools in California indicate you can get your license in 24 hours or so. If that is so then it is up to the individual as to how well they absorb information and process it.
Also if you are in California and have a degree from an accredited college you may immediately apply and take the real estate broker test.
In some instances you may contact a few of your large real estate offices, where they offer free classes and you can get a little insight as to what they expect.
Now once you have your license you must have a real estate broker to sponsor you or some place for you to hang your license. You will have to shop around for one that you are comfortable with and will take on a rookie. Some will take a rookie and some won't.
The very best thing you can do is find a way to market yourself so you can be successful. If you market yourself correctly you should see the results in 90 days or less.
There are many ways to market yourself
#1. You can run newspaper ads offering your services as a real estate agent.
#2. You can hit the streets, find an area to work in (Called a farm) do everything you can think of to let people in this area know that you are the real estate agent to help them with any real estate needs. You have to select the method you want to do this. Mail outs, flyers on doors, seminars in the local community.
What ever you do, don't sit in a real estate office and look at the four walls.
Also be careful of the "do-not-call list" this can be the down fall of a promising career. You should ask your broker about their policy on cold calling. My advice if they don't have one you don't therefore you should not do cold calling. The penalty for not observing the "do-not-call" list is $11,000 per call for both you and the broker.
Put together a professional team to assist you in your position as a real estate agent. You will need, but you are not limited to the following: an independent mortgage broker, title rep, insurane agent, notary public, attorney, escrow officer, CPA or tax preparer and other professionals that you might think will assist you in your position as a real estate agent.
These professionals should pass out your business cards to individuals they meet that are or will need your services. You should also pass out their cards to invdividuals that you meet that need their serevices.
If you have properly marketed yourself in your community and become an expert in real estate then the down times such as this will simply be a small challenge for you. The really good professionals are still in the field and making money. You have to become the best professional you can be.
One thing, stay away from those that are in the No, Stop, Quit Can't be done, mode and other negative things that keep you from being successful.
There is good money to be earned in real estate as an agent the amount you earn will be determined on how well you market yourself.
I hope this has been of some use to you, good luck.

Don't think of real estate sales as a job, no one is paying you a salary. Think of it as if you are starting a small business- that is a more accurate way of looking at this.
You will only get money if you list homes and then get them sold. or if you find buyers and help them locate and purchase the home they want. You get no money for any work you do that does not result in sales. It can be good money but you have to be successful.
Contact a local community college about the courses you need and how long they will take.
