Today the median income for a fully employed male is $41,670 per year (all numbers are inflation-adjusted to 2004 dollars)—nearly $800 less than his counterpart of a generation ago.

_Just going with the "facts" since many conservatives like to say we're doing better than our parents generation did. Let the lies stop with the numbers.

The average wage in the United States is only $29,500. The US is sliding back to the bad old days before unions.

"The average pay for the top fund managers in the United States is $657 million a year. Ten minutes work gives them $35,000 - greater than the average yearly wage of a US worker, which currently stands at $29,500."

Well if your rich or if you believe Faux News your doing better.

Inflation adjusted we are making less, plus we don't have the pension and benefits that y our parents did or the job security that they had.

Your going get "Look at the "Stock Market and Houses." Well both are tanking. If you do inflation adjusting on them is pretty much the same or less.

Look at the value of the dollar VS Gold or Euro... So even if you are making more well your really not.

This is interesting. In 1979 a brand new Chevy pickup was about 9 grand... Which happened to be the average median income. Today a brand new Chevy pickup is 41 grand which is the median income.

It is true. I have seen studies with real numbers that have been adjusted for inflation. We are worse off than our parents were. It's a fact. I remember in junior high our teachers telling us that we would be. (1988) They gave concrete reasons for it as well.

Business Week is an excellent resource.

Back then, if you went to college then you would do well. That is not true anymore. You need at least a Masters and there are no guarantees. We don't have any security or real hope for the future. We have gotten used to cutting corners anywhere we can.

The quality of life has gone way down and you can see that with the rise of obese people. We are working more and harder for less and less. Greed is killing all of us quickly.

There is now a $200,000 dinner and a $25,000 dessert.
The rich have more money to throw away.

They don't want a middle-class because they measure by living standards that are created by economic growth by kissing the @ss of big business. They don't care about having a middle class if the average living standards are higher here than in other countries.

I know that back in the 1960s & 1970s, I could pay for a ticket AND parking for a major rock concert (Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, The Who) for about 3-4 hour's pay (after taxes) at an entry level (like, near minimum wage) job. Now I'm a professional earning about 3 times minimum wage, and a major concert will set me back 6, 8, 10 hour's of pay.

I also know that sales of personal watercraft are DOWN in every category except one -- sales of huge luxury yachts are UP.

Not only that, but the US dollar has slid against other currencies.

It was pointed out on the news today that when measured against gold or any other major currency, the stock market is down 40-60 percent since George Bush took over. Not only are Republicans stupid enough to vote for Republicans, but George Bush has taken half their assets and Republicans are too stupid to care.

When measured in Euros, oil is selling for half of what it was 7 years ago. Europeans get cheap oil. The US gets expensive oil. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!

indeed, add to that that the 8 hour work day is now 9 or 10 for most folks, and the drop in income becomes even more apparent. Our generation works more hours for less money and has much higher expenses...

I thought I was middle class and my income is nowhere near that. I guess I am officially lower income.

Personal experience only: it feels like I'm better off financially than my parents were at this stage in their life. I attribute it mostly to more education than they had.

Of course duh. Gas used to cost 50 cents per gallon and wages were roughly the same. Do the math.
