2 years old this december. on occassion, screen goes blank (light grey, or dark blue); why? also been told that laptops last about 2 years... is this true? about 1 years ago, i bought the extended warranty from dell. seems as if ill need it now...?

If you got the three year warranty use it.

Laptops should be able to last a long time if they are treated right and you don't get a defective one from the factory. I've got one beside me that managed to last more than 7 years and still works.

But before you send it in for servicing check the power management settings just in case you've told it to turn the screen off if you haven't pressed a key for a set number of minutes. I doubt it is that but the information you've given isn't too inconsistent with it being power management.

My laptop last for five full years and it is still working without any RAM upgrade. Your extended warranty will work for you now. Seems like the screen or video card (maybe both) are experiencing problems. It could be no hardware problem, a new driver may resolve the problem. Good lick with Dell service.
