Who's the best motorcycle racer you've seen? (In other words, If you haven't seen Mike Hailwood race, don't list him.) It doesn't have to be a GP guy. If you think the best is a motocross or supermoto racer that's fine. I think Rossi's the best passer I've seen--it ain't easy passing someone who's trying to not let you get by & he can seem to do it to whoever he wants. But I haven't seen much of the old 500 cc legends like Roberts, Schwantz, Rainey, Doohan, etc. And I have close to zero knowledge of other classes & types of motorbike racing.

I have seen many great riders in the past, but I cant say that one is my most favorite. I remember Rick Johnson, Jeff Ward, David Bailey, Ron Lechien and Broc Glover....
But recently we had Jeff Stanton, Jean Michel Bayle and Jeremy McGrath... Now we have Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart.....
In total race wins and championships, RC is the BEST rider I have ever seen race....
but the others were fun to watch.......

Good question - and well put so people don't get into a purile debate as who knows which rider others have seen.

I will be siding with Wiggysan pretty much here as I really can't separate Valentino Rossi and Mick Doohan - so just to make a definite answer I will actually go with Dougie Lampkin, the guys achievements are every bit as equal to Vale and Micks and trials is just one hell of a cool sport.

the best racer ive seen is very close run between schwantz, doohan and rossi but schwantz has the edge 4 me who can forget THAT pass on rainey round the outside on the melbourne loop at donnington..wow.. wot that guy did on an inferior bike was masterclass.. the old 500 class was amazin so many skillfull riders i would say the 90's was the best 4 watchin

Doohan.... why? because he also totally psyched and dominated the opposition in a way that even Rossi couldn't.
Look at Rossi now, 2 seasons down and totally desperate to get Bridgestones, panicking or what?
Doohan'd never do that.

Hey Yaafm

He may not be the best technically or in the record books, but I don't think anyone will ever impress me more than Barry Sheene did when I was a kid.

He was the original bionic man, rode hard and loved to party!

"Men wanted to be him - women wanted to be with him." The cliche fit's like a glove!

Technically I would have to go for Rossi - AWESOME!

Rick Carmichael<33
Ahh I love that guy.
I've met him a few times, and actually held a conversation with him for like 10 minuets.
He is an amazing person, and racer.

I like Jeremy McGrath a lot also, I've seen him race, but I've never met him.

In the Superbike class that would have to be Kenny Roberts
In the Motocross class, that would have to be Roger DeCoster
In the Flat Track class, that would have to be Jay Springsteen

The best rider I've seen has to be Valentino Rossi. He is so passionated and riding with such ambitions to win... I really admire him!

And I also think Marco Melandri is a good rider. He proved his skills. But the number one I would choose is Rossi...
