(22)(18) = 396

EACH LAYER HAS 396; THE ANSWER WILL BE A MULTIPLE OF 396

WE KNOW FROM BEKKI AND TOMMY'S ANSWERS
3 _ _ 8

(8)(396) = 3168

THE MIDDLE DIGITS ARE 16

Johnny should answer 16:

We know that each layer has 22*18 = 396 candies, and that the 4 digit answer is in the form 3##8, so we simply need to know how many layers of 396 it would take to satisfy this number pattern.

Since the last digit in the answer is an 8, we know that there must be 3 rows or 8 rows since there are 396 per row 3*6 = 18, 8*6 = 48).

3 rows would not give us enough, but 8 rows does. 396 * 8 = 3168.

First, calculate how many candies in each layer:
22x18 = 396
If the first digit ti the answer is 3, then there must be between
7 and 10 layers (6 layers = 2376 pieces / 11 layers = 4356 pieces)
If the last digit is 8, then the last digit in the number of layers must be 3 or 8, the only numbers that multiply a number ending in 6 that yields a number ending in 8.
The only number satisfying both these conditions is 8 layers.
Therefore, there are 8x396 pieces, or 3168!
Middle digits are 16!

If it's a college course, he may withdraw from the class and take a "W" if it's before the deadline. Either that or he could answer 16 for an A.
