It may just be that you're less familiar with the colleges in the south, because there are some very highly ranked programs and schools there. Others have mentioned some of these, but I'll add some examples of a few schools which are considered among the top 25-30 or so ranked universities in the US across the board, and I'll give one or two examples of a specific program where they do especially well:
- Georgia Institute of Tech (top 5 engineering, top 10 computer science)
- Duke (top 15 MBA, top 10 medicine, top 10 biochem, top 15 English)
- U Virginia (top 15 MBA, top 10 law, top 15 English)
- U North Carolina Chapel Hill (top 20 MBA, #1 analytical chemistry, top 15 political science)
- Vanderbilt University (top 3 teaching, top 20 law)
- U Texas Austin (top 15 engineering, top 20 law, top 10 computer science)
Other schools that consistantly rank with the best in the nation include Rice, Emory, Wake Forest, Davidson, Washington and Lee, and several others that I won't list (I'll refer you to the US News college rankings, among others, for more.) These schools rank highly in the top 100 universities and colleges in the US, and are amongst the best in the world.
So to put it quite bluntly, you're wrong. You may need to apologise to that principal.

Wow, UT Austin has one of the best engineering schools in the country. Rice has an excellent reputation and is very competitive. Houston would not be a major medical center complex without Baylor Medical School and others in the area. Vanderbilt also has a top medical school as well as other programs. Small but might Belmont University (Nashville) has the best music business program in the south and is educationally very demanding and well-known.
Guess you need to learn more.

Georgia Tech is also one of the best engineering schools. Emory University in Atlanta is great for its med school and divinity school. Vanderbilt is a definite for anything. The Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) is a top-ranked design college. Also, don't discount the large public universities. They're actually better than you may think, especially Univ. of Georgia and Univ. of Florida. Because of tuition scholarships available to all residents of these states, these school have toughened up and are getting hard to gain admission to.. and a lot of their programs (like business or journalism) are in the top-ranks among public universities.
Don't hate the South...it's actually a great place to study.

Univ of Miami is probably the best non-technological university in the south. Even though University of Florida and University of Georgia are classified as party schools they are classified as public ivies. Also Auburn and some texas schools are good.

Rice.
It's incredibly hard to get accepted, though. They are incredibly selective, and they are known for it. It's the one college in the South that I can think of that has an amazing reputation.
