I need a good book to read! I love all kinds; however I have to be hooked within the first chapter or two otherwise I am tempted to put it down. I love all types of books!

The Count of Monte Cristo! Everyone should read it.... Adventure, love, and revenge, and it reads very quickly, even for a thick classic.

It would help if you gave your age and interests, but here goes:

http://www.life-after-harry-potter.com

Included is a list of only the best sorcery fantasy books, grade reading level, a short review of each book along with a brief summary of adult content. There is also a "Reader's Choice" list of favorite books, and a list of heroine sorcery fantasy books. My favorite here is The Hobbit - but it *does* start out slow (the 1st chapter). Fortunately, it picks up quickly after that. Tolkien's characterizations and descriptions are wonderful, though - I think you'll be hooked by the end of chapter 1. If you prefer something on the romantic side, get "A Spell for Chameleon" - an easy read, very original.

Also these: http://www.interleaves.org/~rteeter/grtother.html#great . Lots of lists, but I especially like the Harvard Classics list - all the books that I should have read, but (mostly) never did.

Finally, these: http://www.awardannals.com/wiki/Honor_roll:Genres - pick your genre, find the best books ranked by how many awards they've won.

One final suggestion: Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Not in my 1st list because there is no sorcery. This baby will suck you in right away. Even better than the movie. Female main character. Easy read. Mucho adventure.

I hope this helps.

You Can't Go Home Again, by Thomas Wolfe. A classic, also the saddest and truest book I have read.

If you have not read A Confederacy of Dunces (by John Kennedy Toole), it will make you laugh out loud. However, the personal life story of the author is tragic.

Any book by Diana Wynne Jones is great. Howl's moving castle, its really sweet/romatic, but adventerous at the same times.

Also Dan Brown books, because of the mystery

Anything by Meg Cabot, the greatest Chick Lit writer also Sophie KInsella's Shopaholic.

"Les Miserables" is my favorite, by Victor Hugo. Lovely story, but only worth it if you're willing to sit through a long novel.
"Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck is quite good also, and shorter so it can be read quickly. A great source of conflict. He makes you feel things from all points of view..not many authors can do that.
I also liked "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold, "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte, "Anna Karenina" by Leo Tolstoy, "Jane Eyre" by Charolette Bronte, and "The Da Vinci Code" (as well as "Angels and Demons") by Dan Brown.
Hope that helped out!
Good luck!

I love too many books to just reccomend one, but one of my favorite fantasy authors is Tamora Pierce. Meg Cabot is very good 2. The Maximum Ride series by James Patterson is another one of my favorites.

Try "Eat, Pray, Love"...it is excellent therapy and a fun travelogue. It's not fiction, but it reads like it is.

Also, the Lollipop Shoes by Joanne Harris. I could not put that book DOWN! But maybe first read the prequel to it, Chocolat.

WATERSHIP DOWN by Richard Adams

One of the few books I could not put down from beginning to end. Extremely well written with an excellent story line, this book about a group of rabbits who must relocate from their Down to another Down because of the premonition of one eccentric rabbit is actually enthralling.

I won't tell you anymore because you got to read it to really appreciate it.

If you haven't seen the movie, read Bridges of Madison County--The movie ruins the book.
