The word "envelope" originally came from French, in which the first syllable was pronounced like our English word "on". However, the proper English pronunciation is either a weak "en" (as in "end") or just an unaccented "schwa" (like the second "e" in "temper" or the "e" in tamper").

A vowel in an unaccented syllable is usually pronounced more or less the same
("uh" as represented by the "schwa" which looks like an upside-down, lower-case "e"),
unless there is something you want to stress, deliberately (like the difference between a "compliment" and the "complement").

Unless there is a deliberate stress, there is usually little or no difference in sound for an unaccented vowel.

Someone unfamiliar with the word "envelope" might put more stress on the first syllable (which is the secondary accent),
and thereby make it sound either more like a short "e" or more like the Norman influence in which the "e" takes on its French sound of "on" (which some people think makes them sound more erudite!)

Then again, some people like to pretend erudition by reverting to the French pronunciation, sounding the first letter of "envelope" like the "o" in "SNOB".

NOTE: This should not be a "poll"
It is a legitimate question about proper pronunciation.

Onvelope as in French definite, yet Envelope as in English. What we are speaking now's English and that's Envelope. i do no longer know once you're American or no longer yet individuals get English "incorrect" with distinctive spelling, pronunciation and words for issues that are initially English. So once you are going to communicate or write in the English language then that's ultimate to attain this with the aid of the words of ways the English gain this. i'm no elitist or Englishman myself whether that's ultimate to attain this.
