Are the mariners poor?? They never seem to land any good free agents year in year out. Almost never hear their name in any of the free agent signing rumours too

Seattle is actually 7th out of 30 teams in team payroll in 2007 at $106 million, so they are not afraid to spend money for players they want. They have a good team and might be only a player or two away from the playoffs in 2008, and I believe you will see them spending some money this year.

They have one of the highest salaries in all of Baseball so I don't think that they are afraid to spend money. In the past, the Mariners have found good prospects who they have brought up through their farm system and had success. They have some good young talent on that team along with some good vets like Ichiro, Sexon, Beltre. They could make a run at the playoffs next year if they add a few arms. I think they will make a couple of moves towards pitchers this year.

With billionaire ownership and lucrative Japanese & US TV contracts, the Mariners are actually quite wealthy. Maybe they are just cheap.
