Permanent press cycle is shorter and more gentle than a normal cycle. Probably uses less energy to. This cycle is used to wash permanent pressed clothing. A permanent press is a fabric that has been chemically processed with methanol to resist wrinkles and hold its shape. Treating fabric with the simplest form of alcohol (methanol) has a lasting effect on the fabric.

This chemical process conditions it for shape and wrinkle resistance. The first permanent press slacks were created by Haggar and used in 1964

Colored clothes, such as polo shirts, khaki pants and dress socks are recommended to undergo permanent press cycle in the washer since it is a feature that can help clean, maintain and protect the fabric of your colored garments. The permanent press cycle washes with warm water and rinses with cool, offering water temperatures and a mild-agitation cycle that's gentler on your clothes.

permanent press is more gentle, and doesn't wring as much water from the clothes, so it could use more energy to dry them, but, with fewer wrinkles.
