Garlic is real easy to grow. Here in Washington state I plant the garlic around Columbus day. I plant it about 2" deep, we don't get hard freezes. Than I cover it with 4-6" of mulched leaves. It does just great. I plant a hard neck garlic that puts up a center stalk with a large purple flower. The bees love it and it is a great producer. I get bulbs about the size of softballs. I usually plant 5-7 30 foot rows. This is way too much but it is a pretty crop. We eat it, cook with it, dehydrate it, and give it to the neighbors. If you live where it freezes harder, plant it deeper, up to 4" and add more cover. This could be leaves, hay or most anything that will provide protection. In the spring you can uncover it. I leave the mulch in between the rows for weed control. In late July or early August the bottom leaves will turn yellow. Stop watering and prepare for harvest. Don't leave it in the ground until all the leaves have dried up, this will effect storage. When some of th bottom leaves are yellow, dig it up. Dry in the sun for a couple of weeks and enjoy. I seperate what I want to plant for the next crop and use the rest.

I plant about this time of year. Sunny location, rich but WELL DRAINED soil. You don't need to do anything to it for the winter. Mine usually starts poking shoots up in mid-winter.
