Love of country - and loving it enough to stand up and say its doing wrong.

Nationalism - love of country and blind agreement with everything your country does.

It is unquestioningly following the waving flag and doing what others tell you to do. And for bonus patriot points, one needs to assume an attitude that he/she is better than anyone else from a differing culture/country.

I am now marketing a new cologne (just in time for xmas) - it is called "Parfume de Patriot", and is a blend of the scent of burned oil, gunpowder and flesh. It is VERY manly, and suitable for all persuasions (as long as they are Red, White and Blue)

Patriotism means "acting as though you are a patriot." If you actually ARE a patriot, you love your country and want to do what you think is best for it. There are plenty of patriots who don't act patriotic and plenty of people who aren't patriots who act patriotic.

it means supporting what the country stands for not the country ittelf. EG if the US become a theocratic monarchy those in favour of democracy and religious freedom would be considered patriotic. THats what i think anyway

patriotism means "love of country and willingness to sacrifice for it"

by this definition, it is a joke for people who sit at home and are not sacrificing anything, to call themselves patriotic, and to accuse others of not being patriotic...

...all these republicans who drive around with bumper stickers that say "support our troops"

...how are they patriotic? what are they sacrificing?
