They had children, purposely for the task of adjusting the volume (usually turning it up), changing the channels, and shouting up to dad on the roof when he finally positioned the antenna in a suitable spot.
Childless people? They probably implemented some sort of system with a stick, or trained their dogs to flip channels.

For what I hear they didn't have much time to watch TV first of all. Then they wouldn't surf channels as much because they didn't have all these options of cable, dish, ect. Also they tell me that everytime one of the kids would come into the room they would tell them to sit by the TV and change channels until the person that was watching TV liked if sometime was on. And yes last but not least they were not as "lazy" as some people tend to be now days.

Forget the ancestors, I live today, by choice without either, the tv or the remote!

OK our ancestors didn't even have TVs much less have to worry about a remote. This generation is probably the most lazy of them all.

I remember when I was a kid, and instead of a bus, we had a dinosaur dragging us in a big sled (the wheel came a couple years after I got out of school). Life was much simpler then. Only 13 states and capitals to memorize. Mastodon races. Human sacrifices. Oh Lordy, I miss the good ol days.

Not my Dad. He would either have one of us kids stationed there or sit on a milk stool right next to the knob. Mind you, I think we only had 8-10 channels at that time too.

Well, in my case, my dad would call me in from playing or working outside to change to channel that was only 7 feet away from him.
