Yes, I believe it would help a great deal. A group of us tried that once. Unfortunately, when you are out of gas and you have an emergency, you need to fill your tank.
I believe this gas is a political thing anyway.
I noted in tourist towns the gas is very high around holidays, or when an event such as horse-racing, etc. come to their town, the gas goes up and the people living there are the ones that suffer the most.
I wish I had an answer for you. Unfortunately, I don't. If we all did what you suggested, it would work.
Thanks for a great idea.

even if the entire nation went two days without buying gasoline, it would not hurt the profits of the oil companies. and before you ask, no, not buying gas from one oil company will also not change things. if you want lower gas prices, start by getting the government to reduce the number of blends required around the country, 40+ at last count. get that down to something more like 2-3 different blends, and suddenly there will be much more gasoline available as the gas refineries dont have to keep changing blends during production. second, get the government to reduce taxes on gasoline sales, not just the feds but the state a local governments also. third, eliminate the laws that require gas stations to sell their fuel at a certain minimum price. wisconson for example requires that gas stations sell gas at the retail level with 9% margin between the wholesale and retail prices. fourth, allow the oil companies to drill wells off shore, in the gulf, around florida, and off the california coast, and allow them to drill in the anwr. this oil production will add many millions of barrels of oil daily to oil production, and that will also alleviate gas prices since crude oil prices will fall.

It would have no effect at all. The gas companies know that the public can not go indefinitely without buying gasoline. So, declining to buy gas for two days will do nothing to affect profits for the quarter, or the year

We (U.S.) have promoted industrialization in other countries and now we are in competition with them for fuel. The gas companies have plenty of buyers. It is just who pays the most gets it. The only way i see is to invent a new renewable fuel source. ie. ethanol, bio fuels etc. We have the space to grow the crops, but then the price of corn etc. goes up. Id like to ride a scooter to work but I'm afraid to get mashed by a SUV. I could go on and on...........

If America wasn't addicted to oil and speed, sure.
Maybe the government should lower speed limits back down to 55mph to conserve fuel.
The question would be how many people would actually follow it.

You obviously have no concept of supply and demand and how the market for petroleum products works.
