Depends on the celebrity. As some people said, about a generation for most celebrities. Think of some of the big stars of the 70s and 80s, my children and younger siblings have no idea who Captain Kangaroo, Leif Garrett, Susan Dey, or other big names from that period are.
But other celebrities seem to bridge the cultural divide. Why do we remember James Dean so well when he only starred in 3 movies (only one of which is considered a classic)? Why is Joe DiMaggio remembered as an all-time great when his numbers were worse then Al Kaline? Mark Twain is known by everyone while most people couldn't pick Ernest Hemingway out of a line-up? You might say it is because of their romances and great deeds, but we don't remember Mary Pickford or Errol Flynn (both of whom were famous for their love lives). You might comment about their deaths but I don't think anyone will remember Phil Hartman in 20 years and his death was just as tradgic and his career as great.
Who knows who will be that celebrity from today that will be remembered for a century.

In my view. less than a generation. Once they are no longer in the news 'slebs' like Paris Hilton who are really only famous for being famous are forgotten within a couple of years. Celebrities and those who promote so-called celebrities are such shallow people.

No more than a hundred years, probably. I would say with the proliferation of computer media sources--maybe less. There have always been debutantes, simply famous for their parent's wealth or a useful proximity to the wealthy elite. In the 19th century, there existed (especially pretty) girls famous for being famous, it's not a new concept.

It depends. Paris Hilton is NOT a celebrity. She's a silly creature who should grow up and do something useful with her life AND money.
Now - Hemingway, Twain, Dickins, Shakespeare - were they "celebrities"? Some were, some not - during their time.
True genius will endure.

she's not a celebrity, she's a silly woman who uses sex appeal for money, (and she's not even pretty!)
