First of all, I fully support getting Rhogam injections. Many babies were stillborn or died prior to its introduction.
Yes, only RH negative women get it. It is commonly given during pregnancy after an amnio, car crash or other severe fall or 28 weeks. It is given again after the birth.
Most doctors will not bother testing the purported father of the baby because there have been cases where both parents were RH neg and the baby was RH positive. Prior to DNA testing, this actually caused a lot of marital splits. Normally, the baby is tested after birth to see if an additional injection should be given.
Are there negatives? Yes. The injection only works for women with the little d antigen. Those with big d, e or any other antigen, it's an unwarranted risk. Rhogam is a blood product and there have been rare cases where women have ended up with hepatitis as a result of the Rhogam injection. Some women refuse the prenatal 28 week injection due to this risk. Without it, roughly 2% of women became sensitized. With it, less than 1% become sensitized.
I'm one of those gals who did not get the injection because they didn't give it to poor women then (at least at that hospital and I'm thankful that the state closed it 2 years later). So, Rhogam won't help me at all as I'm already sensitized.

The Rhogam injection is given to those who are Rh-. The doctor told you you're just fine because there is nothing wrong just because you're Rh-.
Those who are Rh+ will not need the Rhogam. Not that it'll harm them but it's an expensive shot and it's just unnecessary.
If your doctor has a tendency to be absent-minded or careless (my first doctor almost missed giving me the Rhogam until I reminded him), you might want to double-check with him that you are indeed Rh- and you need the shot.

it's only given to Rh- moms, when the father is Rh POSITIVE or if his Rh factor is unknown (if he's negative, the baby will be negative, so there's no reason to get the shot. so find out what his blood type is!)
BUT, it's only effective within 72 hours of the shot. meaning, if you get the prenatal Rhogam shot & your blood does not mix with the baby's 3days before or after the shot (which it rarely does except during miscarriage, amniocentesis, chorionic villi sampling (CVS), or major trauma) then the shot was pointless. to give it at 28 weeks is arbitrary.
and there are potential risks to the shot as well, it is a human blood product.
i'm not saying to NOT get one, by any means!!
just wanted to give you some facts that i came across when i was researching it.... that way you'll be well informed :)
i'm also Rh-, and still trying to decide. (& waiting for my hubby to get his blood typed)

your blood might be fine, but the shot prevents it from attacking the baby. You see only Rh - blood people get it, the chance of the baby having Rh+ blood makes it possible for your blood to see the + part of the babies blood as an intruder and can attack it like an infection. Thereby causing many problems.
You will get one during pregnancy and again after you deliver.

My mom instructed me they did hers on her arm. properly to my ask your self the nurse did mine on my butt it did no longer harm. The needle is huge and that i exchange into scare and problem as quickly as I observed it even though it exchange into merely like poke and that each and every person. yet they did take my temperature, blood tension and pulse till now the injection and then instructed me wait approximately 30 minutes or with the objective to envision my temperature, pulse and blood tension back after the shot. Edit: Rhogam shot is for pregnant lady who've unfavorable blood sort. as an occasion i'm A- and my fiance is O+ So theirs a exchange that our infant has valuable blood meaning my physique can start to make antibodies against the infant. so they provide us rhogam shot to keep away from it.
