And if so, what were some of them, and were you pleased with them.

I've got quite a few, most recently:

"Slanted and Enchanted" by Pavement
"A Crow Left to the Murder" by Incubus
Jurassic 5's EP
"Stories from the City..." by PJ Harvey

So thanks all for the recommendations :)

lovnrckets:
Agreed, I never bother with music reviews.

It's great to see that so many people are picking up on new bands from each other.

Sookie:
Personally, I would have recommended CYHSY's debut, but I guess that's just my preference. Thanks for the Incubus tip by the way, I really like the album :)

lovnrckets:
I can't believe I hadn't heard much about Pavement before recently, "Slanted & Enchanted" is amazing. Thanks for the help on that one.

Hey Prof. I asked a question about Pavement, having heard "Grounded" and having heard their name mentioned a few times on here, and ended up getting a lot of really positive feedback, which lead me to "Slanted...". Great album!
Good thing you gave (the real) Spoon another chance, I think they're really good too.

Buzzkill:
The songs on Mannequin Men's MySpace sound pretty good. I'll have to look into them. Thanks :)

Hi Rukrym, I'm glad you like J-5. I really dig that ep. Who recommended Slanted and Enchanted? That's another really good one.

Anyways, I've picked up a few things. I went a little too crazy in the iTunes store so I'm taking a break, but I've tried out a lot of tracks and a couple records based on recommendations in here. I think the thing I've liked the best so far (at least that I'm remembering off the top of my head) was the couple of Wolfmother tracks I grabbed. Wolf Parade was pretty good too. It's worked out well though. Even the stuff I've heard about here and haven't really liked I still acknowledge as good. Just not my cup of tea. I've found this as a great place for recommendations.

Wait, scratch that. The best stuff I've picked up because of this site was Spoon. It's funny, it was right before Buzzkill formally recommended it to me that I picked up a couple tracks, and innevetably a record, from seeing their name dropped enough times. I had bought a Spoon record several years ago, but did not realize that it was by a different band called Spoon (stupid used cd store, probably someone somewhat local) and it was awful, maybe the worst record I've ever bought. Thanks to seeing their name dropped enough around here I gave them another shot and they're great.

Kinda sort of. Jakalope is a band I've seen a fair amount of talk about. The name was vaguely familiar so I did some further reading. That's when I remembered that was the Canadian outfit that Trent Reznor was assisting in production. Haven't bought the CD yet, but downloaded several tracks. Jack Off Jill was another group that falls into this. Don't you just love that name? Don't worry, Sookie. The way you asked your question was a lot different from the classic "name some good bands." Can't wait to hear what you think of MSI. Oh yeah, Spooky saved me from wasting money on the new Marilyn Manson. That was better than any album review I could have read. Gotta give her props for Jakalope too. Rukrym - It might have been Mew since I always liked The Zookeeper's Boy, but I don't think I can take credit for Band of Horses or Rogue Wave. But thanks anyways. :-)

That's awesome! :)

I sure have picked some things up based on recommendations of the citizens of R&P:

Rise - The Answer: this is something jmike recommended and I really like it. It's straight-forward, no frills rock music - it's not the least bit pretentious, which I dig.
You'll Rebel To Anything - Mindless Self Indulgence: lovnrckets suggested this one. It took a few trips around the CD player for me, but I really like it. It's very different from the stuff I normally listen to, and I think that's cool.
Some Loud Thunder - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah: it's a Prof. Anger recommendation and honestly, I don't remember it very well - I listened to it once when I bought it, and my boss has had it ever since. I need to go in his office and take it back!

I have many, MANY more on my R&P "must-have" list, and since I had such good luck this time I will definitely be crossing a few more off of it.

Edit: lovnrckets - I was chair dancing. I still do! :)

jmike - very, very cool. :)

rukrym - woo-hoo...I'm so glad to hear that! I've heard that about CYHSY's first album - I need to check that one out as well. :)

I've definitely been encouraged to check out bands that I've been on the fence about - I'm really close to picking up an album by Placebo pretty soon with all the great things I keep hearing about them.

For the most part though I live for finding musical treasures on my own : ) Something about all the hard work and patience it takes to discover something truly worth buying.

Amazon actually dropped a gem in my lap over a week ago - Mannequin Men. Awesome band! MachPen can back me up on this.

Prof. - I'm glad you discovered the REAL Spoon : )

Oh yes :)

Darth has recommended me some Rainbow tracks {because I already love Blackmore's Night and wanted to go back to 'the source'!}, so I'll be buying them soon.

Sarah C is responsible for me getting 'Meddle' by Pink Floyd. I already had a few other of their albums, and I'd heard it years ago, but she mentioned it so much that I had to get it!

Chunga has got me into :~
Vinegar Joe ~ I am LOVING 'Black Smoke Rising From the Calumet', and their cover of Hendrix's 'Angel', amongst others.
Stone the Crows ~ not listened to them yet, as I'm waiting for the first album to arrive {ordered 4, no.2 came today}.
And he is *sort of* responsible for me buying more Sandy Denny / Fairport Convention.
{the first two may yet lead me to buy some Elkie Brooks and Maggie Bell solo albums!}

~*~ Thank You ~*~

I started listening to more Yes because bluemusic/proghead/music note guy (now deleted) kept pushing Close to the Edge at me, so I went out and bought Close to the Edge and fell in love. I bought several Billy Joel albums because Joe kept talking about him, and I'm going to get a Blue Oyster Cult album because Darth recommended me one, I also bought a Riverside cause of conie and Darkwood I feel like I'm missing some, I just don't realize it....

conie: yea... sad, it was like his 4th or 5th account. I got Second Life Syndrome.

Yes, definitely. I trust many here more than I do the reviews from major publications. Jakalope was one of the bands I've learned about.

I'm glad the Pavement worked out for you, I remember that question.

It took a few turns but Sookie was chair dancing to MSI, lol.

That's awesome.

If I were motivated to buy CD's - honeslty, I but so few anymore that I can't answer yes to.

However, if I WERE to suddenly become inclined to go buy a CD, I'd pick up some Mindless Self Indulgence.
