Don't give up. Ask at your local church.

Thanksgiving is like the #1 day that people volunteer. It's the day that most places don't need any more, they are swamped by volunteers. If you want to help people, trying thinking of the misfortune of others at another random day in the year, when others don't feel so pressured or inspired or whatever to help. I suggest April 27th. No particular reason.

Everyone wants to volunteer on holidays, so if you wanna do it next year, reserve your spot right now. People usually do this way in advance because everyone does it on holidays. Especially Thanksgiving and Christmas.

If you wanna do something, maybe go to children's hospitals, kids with leukemia or whatever need to see volunteers, too. :) I think that would be awesome to do. Keep searching, you'll find something. Old folks home? Try something you weren't thinking of since chances are someone hasn't thought of it either.

One thing my family did one year was purchased many duffle bags from Goodwill, then filled them with old clothes or purchased new ones, sleeping bags, sweatshirts/jackets, toilet paper, canned food with tabs on them, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shoes, anything we take for granted. Then we drove around looking for homeless people and "delivered" the bag to them. They really seemed to like those, and it felt good to help. As we were doing that, we saw a family who had made a home cooked thanksgiving dinner (but enough for many people) and they were parked in a parking lot close to a group of homeless people and just spent their day serving everyone food from their car. Good luck!

the best place to volenteer is a nursing home. those people need you more then homeless or poor people. and everyone forgets about them including their families. just going in visiting makes people very happy especially on holidays. give them something to look forward to. also they are great company i love talking to them they have the best stories. and do it more then just the holidays they will take your visit anyday :)

Ask salvation army, or just donate items to the local food pantry.
