so many of the comments on Y/A from MCR fans seem to have that Jonestown/Heaven's Gate glazed-eye vacant stare (if I could visualize them)

Thank you for the laugh.

Yes. It's a cult. Symptoms include poor spelling, grammar, text-message style typing, Gerard Way saving one's life, life-long love and thumbs-downing anyone who dares to disagree that they are the greatest band to walk the face of this earth.

McR RuLz!! DeY wIlL S@Ve uR LyF!!! Don'T h8!! gEr@rD Is H@WtT!!!!1111!!!

Don't look directly into the text-type for fear of subliminal messages. :)

Funny you mention this. I wish I could find the past links of questions I've answered that have compared emo fashion to the Heaven's Gate freaks. Seriously, the similarities are frightening. But yes, MCR most certainly is a cult. A cult of teenagers with really bad taste in music and equally bad grammar. Now if we send them all for an extended vacation to Jonestown, I'd be good with that.

Here's the glazed-eye personified!

Saturn - Probably so because it makes it that much easier to fit into female jeans, which is the fashion choice of male emos.

Master C - Some of those girls could always enter Witness Relocation. And that picture was hilarious and scary all at once, WOW!

Sylvia - You could get a gig as a translator!

See, this is actually what I admire about MCR... that they can affect their fans in such a profound way. It truly is cult-like.

I think people tend to forget that many *great* music acts have had cult-like fanbases... The Beatles ("Beatlmania"), T. Rex ("T. Rextacy"), Elvis (err... popularization of "Rock n Roll"), etc... All very much a "cult". Like it or not, MCR is slowly but surely joining the ranks.

Ahaha, lovable. you already know o.k. that they're a band. i discover it ironic that people who dislike the band ask lots greater questions than the followers do. especially pathetic in case you inquire from me. inspite of each little thing, i'm no longer available asking "Is FOB a cult?" or "Why does Marilyn Manson suck lots?" I even have greater constructive issues to do. might I propose gathering a interest of a few kind? it will do you wonders, I promise. =)

Depends how you take them.
You can be an annoying, immature little girl who TaLkzZz LikEE THiiSS!!!!!11111 AnD TeLLs EeverYoNe MCR iiS l1kee ThEir F@VoUriiitE b@Nd Eva ANd GerArd Is SOO hOt...
Or you can respect them and enjoy their music.
If you chose the second option, no, it is not a cult.
Just a band.

I've been thinking about the nature of that band lately, and came to one conclusion:
I feel bad for them.
You know they wanted to be taken seriously as a punk act, then all of a sudden (for no apparent reason I remind you), an army of 13 year old girls decide they LOVE My Chemical Romance. Now, they are stuck with that stigma for the rest of their lives. They can't be taken seriously anymore, because they are going to be branded as a phase.
At least they aren't Ricky Martin, N*Sync, Los Del Rio, or New Kids on the Block though. Those acts drove me more nuts than My Chemical Romance. At least My Chemical writes their own songs and distorts their guitars.
I still don't like them though.

I find it very unfortunate that people such as yourselves would generalize an entire fanbase. Especially a large one, such as MCR's. Shouldn't you be a bit more intelligent than that?
For the record, not all the fans are thirteen, and they don't all have hideous grammar. I'm very dissapointed that people who seem to give themselves such airs, would fall prey to such pitiful generalization.

Yes, they are a cult which hyptonizes the feeble with crappy "music". There soon will be a mass wrist cutting so that all the automatons in the "congregation" will meet their so called "god"
