If you are getting a warning that that the "NTLDR" can't be found or is missing, then the BIOS is not detecting your hard drive or at least can't find Windows.

The first thing to try would be to open the BIOS and make sure that it is detecting your hard drive. If it is then I can assume the the drive is working.

Next, remove the side of your computer and unplug both cables (power and IDE) and then reconnect them. Now start your system and see if it boots. If it does then all that was wrong was a little corrosion. It this didn't cure the problem, then you may need to run the Windows Repair console. To do that, read the following.

USING THE WINDOWS REPAIR CONSOLE

Put your XP disk into your CD drive and restart your system. This will start the XP installation process. When you come to the screen that asks if you want to install XP or if you would like to “Repair” XP, choose Repair. This will open the repair console command prompt. At the prompt, type: chkdsk /r. (There is a space between the k and the /. Now hit “Enter”. The repair should now start. Allow it to run until it stops. This can take some time, so be patient.

If all goes well, XP will replace any and all missing operating system files.

If all of the above fails to repair your system, then I would suggest that you take it into one of your local repair shops.
