Limerick city is a small city with a huge heart. There is indeed lots of shopping, lots of restaurants and cafes and there is a great food market in the Milk Mark on Saturday until the early afternoon.
Nightlife is pretty good too, there is always something going on. As well as the usual clubs, bars, etc., the city has a thriving arts scene which is also well worth checking out. Theatre, visual arts, performances, etc - all there.
Unfortunately the media can only focus on the negative aspects and this is how Limerick got its largely undeserved nickname of Stab City. This is only because Dubliners like to think that they exclusively have the great shopping and nightlife, but all the other cities in Ireland have plenty to offer.
