Great idea! I hate that Christmas ads are on air each year before Halloween is even finished. Everyone has forgotten the REAL reason for the season, and buying junk for one another is not it.

I'm Jewish, and I still think this is ridiculous. Christmas is a beautiful holiday full of joy and hope and fellowship. If it turns into a big gift giving nightmare, you're to blame. Tone down Christmas: make some gifts instead of buying stuff for everyone you look at. You want to give out gift baskets? Put together some on your own, with homemade breads or cookies, or thoughtfully purchased items....the prepackaged gift baskets are really impersonal. Worried about chinese toys? Make sure you buy them from elsewhere, nothing wrong with giving children toys.
You seem to be focusing heavily on what you GET for Christmas, instead of what you are giving. Frankly, I've always got a bigger joy out of giving gifts to others than in recieving them, so maybe you should think of Christmas from that perspective, and you won't be so hateful about it.
Also, don't feel OBLIGATED to buy someone a present, just because they bought you one. The idea of making a list of all the people you OWE something to, rather than all the people who MEAN something to, is what seems to make this holiday so stressful for everyone. Giving gifts is supposed to bring as much happiness to the giver as the reciever. I hope you have a happy holiday season, regardless of how you celebrate (or not).

I can agree with you from the point of view that all this "spend spend spend" hype is not on. Personally I have been widowed and have no children so the "normal" perception of Christmas is meaningless.
However how lovely to remember that it is Christ's birthday and why not give to a children's home, a charity or hospital----whatever.
Just quietly give to help people or animals having a hard time.
Believe me it is better than giving to people who already have more than enough. Blow the greedy grasping sellers of tat and other unnecessary junk that fills the shops for weeks on end.

I know of a family that instead of giving traditional gifts to each other, they donate to a charity in the other persons name. I have thought about doing this. Instead of getting superficial gifts, you could be helping people that truly need it. What a great way to celebrate the birth of our Savior ,dont you think?

that's insane!!!! you are so not serious, are u?
Look there will always be something out there tainted with something. I've heard these warnings about tainted stuff all my life and I'm 31. I've got two kids, three cats, a husband and five dogs. Come on... we're all fine. Don't stop living your life.

What gets me is the people who use Christmas as an excuse to get offended because something clashes with their own beliefs.
Examples:
People complaining because Walmart wanted to say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas"
People crying that Santa takes the "Christ" out of "Christmas"
I read today that stores are encouraging Santas to say "Ha Ha Ha" instead of "Ho ho ho" because they are afraid of being offensive to women.... as a woman I find the ban offensive...I think you have to actually be a "ho" to be offended by that and by suggesting that it's offensive to "women" they're suggesting all women are hos...
I'd be happy just to have the days off without the family or present obligations

I think everyone should not send Christmas cards this year, then perhaps the post office will let us have stamps cheaper.
The price of Christmas cards should be lowered as well. The stamps cost more than the card sometimes. Stupid!!!
