Don't get me wrong, eventually I will call a repairman, but would like to be prepared, you see, I am currently living in Mexico and here they treat women like were are too dense to understand anything, so they give you some garbled explanation to hike the bill, something that does not happen when it is a male that requests the service.

Ok, so far I've
- dusted the compressor
- thoroughly dusted the ventilation fan
- cleaned out the freezer defrost condensation cup
- unclogged the drain tube and made sure it empties into the drain pan
- given the coils a thorough cleaning

My fridge is a whirlpool model ET20NKXZN00

Here's hoping it will help. Thanks for the good advice. Tech is coming in tomorrow anyway.

I agree with scooby that you should clean the coils. They're either on the back or underneath, depending on what model you have. Dust might not be the problem, but the cleaning doesn't take too long and could save you money. It's not easy to get a vacuum hose into tight areas, but you can use an unbent wire hanger and a rag to knock off the dust.

Have you checked to see what the temperature of the air is in the freezer side and the fresh food side?
If the temp is 0 (Fahrenheit) in the freezer side then you probably do not have a freon problem. In contemporary Frigs the compressor is designed to run 90-95% of the time particularly in warme areas.

Make sure you do not have the air ways blocked in both the fresh food and freezer sides. The cold is generated on the freezer side then passively distributed to the fresh food side. Some people want to get the fresh food side colder so they turn down the temp but havve blocked air movment so it can never acheive the correct temp.

Other likely situations are:
1. Low freon. Check the temp inside. If it is cold enough then that probably i no the issue.
2. Blocked coils. Manually clean the dust from the coils.
3. Stuck defrost timer. See the responces already given.

Good Luck.

search online for your specific model. Mine had a timer that cycled through all the different modes. Sometimes that timer dies or fails to advance. Mine ran continously because I jammed the evaporator fan causing an overheat, losing all of my frozen foods. The timer wouldn't advance due to temperature.

I cycled mine manually with a screw driver to test all the modes to see if it was stuck in Defrost.
