My husband and I went for our first prenatal appointment on Tuesday (8 weeks and 3 days). The heartbeat was 178 bpm, is that normal? Also how many of you have tested positive for cystic fibrosis? Scarey!!

Let me explain, I am waiting for results for the cyctic fibrosis, I didn't test positive (yet)?!

That's normal. I think the heart rate peaks around 9 weeks with avg around 170 bpm. Then it slowly levels off until the 14th weeks when average is around 140 bpm. However, that's just an average.

A strong fetal heartbeat should be detectable by ultrasound, with a heartbeat of 140-170 bpm by the 9th week.

Whoa your lucky to even here the heartbeat this early. And yes that is a very normal heart beat. I find Web MD very helpful.

Totally normal heartbeat. As ur baby grows, the heartrate will decrease. Don't know much about the CF though. sorry.

178 is totally normal. Perfectly healthy.
