Condi didn't even know what a Palestinian was until she took this job... I rarely pay attention to her unless I am praying that she doesn't say anything stupid. This quote wasn't stupid, it was just words said to fill a gap but has no substance... Condi's great at substanceless rhetoric.

Right now the plight of the Palestinians is one of the causes used by extremists to solicit donations and recruit members. The logic is that western countries support Israel at the expense of the Palestinians and would likely do the same to other Islamic people. So a strong independent Palestinian state would contradict that argument. If you think about it her statement is self evident. The problem is that saying something is beneficial and making it happen are two different things. Palestine and Israel cannot agree on the borders of the proposed state and Israel has a legitimate fear of bad blood between it and the other countries in that area. Even if Palestine is liberated and made an independent state, there is no reason to believe they will have any affection for Israel. The opposite is more likely true. Israel fears allowing yet another hostile state on its border. Israel has cause to fear.

Of course a strong Palestinian state could and probably would cut down on extremism. What the other members here who have answered are missing is that Palestinians are one of the most disenfranchised people in the world. They've come from being some of the most well educated, successful (and secular, I might add) people in the Middle East, to being the most impoverished and screwed over people of this region, mainly because their land was ripped out from beneath of them from Jewish terrorists, who at the time did not have a state. The story we understand now is perhaps the best rewriting of history ever performed.
Regardless of the way you understand the history, a Palestinian state that had actual sovereignty over its people and land could begin to end this hopelessness that is leading so many to commit suicide bombings. This state, that will have to include at least part of Jerusalem to be legitimate to the Palestinians, can engage the public, and give them other means to voice their discontent over the injustices they have suffered. It will eventually create a strong civil society, wherein a much social capital will be generated. When people don't feel as if they are powerless in the face of events happening around, they will not resort to extremism. This is how a strong state would end extremism.

The Palestinians should not be trusted. They will say anything to gain power. History records what they have done with power. It hasn't been good. Israelis don't want peace with Palestinians, for this is only a lie that is for Israel becoming weak, and the Palestinians gaining power.

We have too many walls already dividing people .
Two kids are tugging at the same toy going mine , mine , mine , and beginning to annoy the hard working adult that bought the toy and just wants some quiet around the house .
So he walks over and takes the toy away from the one making the least noise .
Is this fair or even right ? I wonder .
If the child left without a toy begins to yell and scream even though it was his toy he gets sent to his room and in some cases spanked .
In order to get noticed you have to make a lot of noise to get what you want even if you do not deserve it .............
The Indians owned America at one time yet they had no central government with paperwork detailing the description of the property owned .
We had guns and paper and they had years of occupation and we all know who came out on top .
Right does not always mean that you will have what belongs to you .
As they say might makes right .
When people support Palestine it only angers and causes Israel to scream louder because it knows if they become mightier then right or wrong they will reclaim the land taken from them .
Yes the land has been taken and retaken and taken dozens of times by those with the power to hold on to it .
So America supports and gives the help to the one currently screaming the loudest .
Flying planes into buildings was a scream to get attention by people who's entire way of life is being eroded with the Americanization of the Middle east .
With money and power comes the ability to indulge ones appetite for drugs ,sex , and control .
This was and is whats happening all over the Middle east as oil rich families send kids to the big city . They can not resist the temptation to return and change the rules which the poor have lived by for centuries .
Should women be covered from head to toe and denied an education ?
I could care less. Evolution and time will take care of that situation .
The problem is along with our trade comes our concepts and ways of life .
Those who benefit from our money travel and experience new things which in turn changes society .
A president can not get a ******** in the oval office without some yahoo going nuts claiming he destroyed this nation with his sexual exploits .
Give me a break .
A 100 billion dollar porn industry says otherwise .
Hollywood cranks out 200 movies a year and a few hundred shows for television and the big screen .
Porn cranks out two hundred videos of people having sex every hour . . .
Lets work to take down the walls and define individual rights .
This land is my land
this lands not your land
I have a shot gun
if you ain't got one
you better get off
before It goes off
this land is private property .

Actually; it is rather simple.
The Palestinian territory is in 2 sections - Hezbollah took over the Gaza Strip ... they are fighting Israel. The other side is trying to work it out.
The larger part of Palestine is working towards peace and a working resolution that everyone can live with.
When that peace and freedom happens - Hezbollah will start losing people who REALLY are fed up with fighting, killing, and dieing.
That is going to create a wave of influence over those who are tired of loosing family to suicide bombs and terrorist acts.
It will also show people in general that peace can be established which will create resistance towards fighting in Iraq and in Iran too!
People will start to realize they do NOT need the fundamentalists to be able to live a peaceful and prosperous life.

I think she means a Palestinian base that resists other Arabs and Muslim extremists.. Considering that isn;t going to happen, having a fractured Palestinian movement suits everyone's agenda.
Israel doesn't want peace - what purpose would that serve? That in turn would necessitate a re-evaluation of the IDF, and once the fear of "terror" is removed, how would they be able to control their own population?
I feel a significant percentage of Israelis actually DO want peace, but their leaders have other designs..(The same is true for the Palestinians, too). But without waving the flag of ideology, the common-folk can actually start thinking for themselves - this is something governments fear.

What happened in Gaza is proof enough that a Palestinian state will be nothing but an Islamic extremist controlled nation.

A calm environment between Palestine and Israel would enhance peace in the entire Middle East. Less news from the area would eventually place these two out of sight and out of mind. Most of the Middle East countries are now prosecuting Al Qaida and Taliban for their unwarranted killing of fellow Muslims. That too will bring about change in the Middle East, it will slow the recruiting down for Wahhabism and increase more moderate and peaceful Islam.

At the present moment there appears to be two Palestinian states Gaza, and Eastern Palestine. The Eastern Palestinian's seem to be slightly less radical.
