It may or may not be powdery mildew, either way you need to stop watering late in the day and water in the morning just before light so that the grass has time to dry before darkness. Catch grass clippings and dethatch the turf area yearly. If it is isolated then spot spray with a fungicide if it is wide spread treat the entire area. There is some species specificity in powdery mildew BUT, nearly all will survive on other species. It may be sooty mold that is sporulating, giving it a white color, even if this is the case the above treatments will apply and help to reduce infection and re-infection. Wait to fertilize until AFTER the mildew problem is solved, fertilizing now will only promote the mildew.

I've never heard of powdery mildew on the lawn, but, that doesn't mean there isn't. I did how ever go to Ortho Products and found some diseases that might be similar in appearance.

This according to pkg can also be put on pets for fleas. Always using caution with any chemicals around people, pets or water.
Walmart carries it.

I doubt it's powdery mildew. Powdery mildew is pretty species-specific. (The varietyof Powdery Mildew that affects roses, for instance, is different from the one that affects lilacs.).

And I've never heard of grass being suceptible.

I suspect it's one of the many molds or funguses that lawns DO get. When you identify it, you'll be better able to treat it.

Powdery mildew responds to a chemical called Daconil. You find it at a garden center, sometimes just labeled Liquid Fungicide, under the Fertilome brand, or Hi-Yield brand
