I just got my book list for next semester. All the books are running over a hundred dollars - USED.

It isn't like these books are nominated for Booker awards! What makes them so expensive?

The college bookstore isn't making the big profit on these that you'd think - the publisher is. And the reason they're so expensive is that in most cases, they don't sell very many of these as compared to other types of books.

Don't buy your books from the campus bookstore. Look on half.com and amazon.com for used books. You will generally save about 75% by buying used from other students online. Just make sure that you buy soon enough to get them before class starts.

Then, once the class is over, put them back on Amazon or half.com and get your money back. If you take care of your books then you can often get back everything you spent and sometimes a little more.

Great question! It makes me wonder the exact same thing every single time I pick one up. The prices are just rediculous. After four years in college, I came to realize that it is just a price that the university charges to get profits from the students. Ebay and other sites have identical books for less than half the price. I usually buy the exensive one and order the cheaper one online. After it comes, I return the ripoff book to the bookstore. So far I have been able save quite a bit.

A very limited audience. My graduate physics texts were ridicuously expensive - because they're printing this huge book and only going to sell a few copies.

The fact that you have to buy the book, so they can charge whatever they want. I effin' hate it too.
