Shock absorbers are easy to replace and any decent garage should be able to do it for you. How much it costs will depend on whether you go for genuine BMW parts or not. Personally I would go for a make like Bilstein. They do factory replacement shockers which are cheaper than BMW sourced parts, however they actually make the ones BMW supply.
Depending on which model 5 series you have they will cost you around £80 each.
I would expect the total bill to be in the region of £250. £160 ish for the bits and about £100 to fit them. Oh and don't go to a BMW main dealer as it will cost you twice as much. This is a simple job and any half decent spanner monkey can do it.

Just putting in my two cents here from America. BMW parts over here are not more expensive than American and Asian cars. I get this all the time from customers, something like this "I know since its a BMW the parts are going to be really expensive" So some parts houses and repair shops mark the price WAY up. If you look around you can find replacement struts a lot cheaper than the dealership and your shop.
Also that other person is right about replacing the shock mounts (the part at the top that attaches the shock to the body and allows the wheels to turn) When they wear out the car usually likes to follow groves in the road and the steering is quite "jumpy".

Kwik Fit Shock Absorbers

You can probably reuse your old springs. So buy your struts, strut mounts, bump stop and plastic strut cover. Your car uses "struts" in front, and "shocks" behind.

This job will take approximately 1 hour each side, it is also recommended that you get the car re-aligned.

Boge and Sachs brands are considered "OEM" replacements.

The Bilstein brand is a popular upgrade for many BMW owners.

When buying your struts, make sure you know if your car came with Sport/M-sport/M-Technic suspension or just standard suspension.

" Shocks will cost about £100 for your car, but not sure how much to fit them. Garage prices vary so much. Get a quote from Kwik Fit.

Get a quote from a fast fit centre then knock £20 pound off! what they quote and say for example they say £150 fitted, say well i had a quote for £130!! can you compete?? and then stay quiet don't respond until they answer...they can do it and it works.

Good luck! : )

Search for a suspension specialist company - one that does shocks regularly. They are faster because of their expertise and normally cheaper as a result. If you have all the gear to do it yourself you would not be asking this but you can also buy the shocks on-line and fit them.

if you buy the shocks from eurocarparts make sure you also buy any additional replacement bushes or top mounts as well.if you just order the shocks on their own, this all they will supply.you may consider replacing the rear ones as well.worn shocks effect braking stop distances as well as promoting faster tyre wear.
