Upbringing ?, Intelligence ?, something in the water? Or is this the natural course of events for a free society to "test" itself against domestic dissent

Partly upbringing. Partly what we hear and read.

And partly what we eat: when we soup up our bodies with junk food and chemicals, it clouds our thinking.

Our attitudes towards our fellow man makes us so different. Some of us think everybody should have the same opportunities that are only afforded the rich while others even those who don't have that much think that is considered a hand out to the lazy , What they don;t understand is if someone is truly lazy they will not take you up on the opportunity to better themselves. They also do not understand by educating the poor and helping them to become healthier the non lazy Will become productive members of society giving back in purchase power as well as tax dollars. So I guess what I am saying, not having a vision, along with greed and selfishness makes us very different.

America split in 1968, and the divide has been growing every since then.

Now its more about whose side did what to whom, investigations, and revenge, rather than about finding solutions to the issues.
