It was part of JFK's inagural address. I heard it live. It was great. What he was encouraging people to do was to help others not be selfish. He encouraged things like the Peace Corps and domestic programs similar to it. He was encouraging people to work in the food banks and soup kitchens that feed the poor and homeless. He wanted us to take part in cleaning up seashores, parks and to plant trees in the national forests when devistated by clear cut logging. He basically believed that we are all of the human race and need to look out for and help one another. Look at the street beggar and think....There, but by the grace of God, go I.
Kennedy didn't want us merely throwing money at social programs but to roll up our sleeves and pitch in. Participate in youth programs, in programs that assist the elderly, help poor kids get out of the projects and into a better life, that is what JFK was saying in his inaugral address.

It was said by JFK encouraging people to get involved, in their community, in their local schools, in government, in anything that would make this a better place. The first part was, don't ask what you're country can do for you, but what you can do for your country. He wanted people to see they have the power to make things happen and we shouldn't wait around for handouts, or for others to act. It was a speech that was taken to mean several things as were many of his speeches, if you are interested in the most obscure speech he gave, Google "the president and the press" He was pleading with the press to give us the truth, but they haven't yet and probably never will.

Be the best citizen I can be. Learn the word and the meaning of COMPASSION and not throw it around loosely, like some politicians I know. "Compassionate Conservative"... those words are not used conservatively...

What can my country do for me and for my fellow man? We don't pay taxes for nothing. It's a two-way street.
